The Area 2017-12-21T10:25:50+00:00

The Area

The Gers is truly “La France Profonde” (rural France). There is not a motorway in sight and the area has more geese than people.

The Gers is studded with Gascon delights — wonderful food, superb wines and friendly locals. The area is dotted with sleepy villages basking in the rolling hills and is often likened to Tuscany or the England of 50 years ago.

In summer there are a myriad of village fêtes plus wine and music festivals. It is a mecca for jazz lovers and is home to the Internationally famous Marciac Jazz fortnight every August. It has hosted Diana Krall, Wynton Marsalis and — many years ago — Ella Fitzgerald.

Within a short drive there is a country music festival held in the summer. Actor Larry Hagman was once seen there. And a Latino music festival takes place in Vic Fezensac at the end of every July.

Nearby

There are many delightful villages near, and not so far. The small village of Dému En Armagnac is just 5 minutes away by car — with a grocery, garage and bakers.

The town of Vic Fezensac is less than 10 minutes drive and boasts 12 restaurants plus banks, bakers, butchers, assorted shops, cinema and various bars and cafés. There is an excellent market every Friday.

Within a 45 minute drive there are many delightful villages and small towns with more restaurants and cafés. Bastide villages built in the 13th century are plentiful as are walled villages of great charm.

The house is surrounded by vineyards and tastings abound. Cote de Gascogne, St Mont and Madiran wines are sensational and growing in poularity throughout the world.

The roads are very often empty although the main RN 124 runs nearby and goes from the Atlantic coast to Toulouse on modern carriageway. Many of the small roads are excellent and charming to drive.

The Pyrenées are 1.5 hours drive and from the top of the road near the house, the mountains can be clearly seen on about 50 days in the year.

The Atlantic coast and beaches are 2 hours away.

Bordeaux is 2 hours to the north west and beautiful Toulouse, France’s second largest City is 1.5 hours to the east.

There is a golf course 25 minutes away and two further courses within 45 minutes.

There are excellent facilities for water sports at nearby lakes and the charming country lanes are ideal for cycling and walking. The pool is safe and alarmed.

Climate

Dému is the same latitude as Nice but very different. A climate controlled by the mountains and ocean.

Spring — stunning and colourful.

Summer — warm, long days.

Autumn — lasts until December, with fabulous flowers and some beautiful blue skies.

Winter — it can be cool, but the house has two wood-burning stoves plus central heating and is very cosy.

Visitors Comments

From the many testimonies that can be read on this site, all visitors find a magical quality to the house — particularly on summer evenings when drinks can be enjoyed at sunset.

Had a marvelous week in Demu. House & surroundings are beautiful. Looking forward to our return.

Our whole gang has throughly enjoyed these blissful two weeks and we can’t get enough of CLB.
